Overview

Diagnosis-Related Groups are a method of classifying admitted patient episodes into clinically meaningful groups that are expected to consume similar hospital resources. Instead of looking only at individual tests, medications, procedures, and room charges, DRG methodology considers the entire admitted episode. In KSA, AR-DRG supports the move toward greater transparency, better case-mix management, improved coding quality, efficient use of resources, and value-based healthcare. This course is intended for education and awareness. It does not replace the latest Council of Health Insurance regulations, Saudi Health Council standards, ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS coding standards, Saudi Billing System publications, payer contracts, official grouper logic, or professional clinical-coding advice.

What you will learn

  • Explain DRG in simple, nontechnical language.
  • Describe the purpose of AR-DRG in the KSA healthcare system.
  • Explain relative weight, base rate, Case Mix Index, inliers, and outliers.
  • Identify factors that may legitimately increase or decrease clinical complexity.
  • Recognize documentation and coding practices that negatively affect grouping.
  • Differentiate accurate documentation from inappropriate upcoding.
  • Interpret basic DRG reports and case-mix trends.
  • Understand the roles of physicians, CDI specialists, coders, finance, and quality teams.
  • Understand how an episode moves from documentation to a final DRG

Requirements

  • A clinical background in providing patient care or revenue cycle experience
